Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to some of the more commonly asked questions that we receive.
My icebox is not holding ice or staying cold for as long as it says it should. Is my icebox faulty?
To get the most out of your icebox, we recommend using blocks of ice or frozen bottles of water to keep your food and drinks cold rather than crushed/party ice as they last significantly longer. If possible we also recommend a 2:1 ratio of ice to product. Dry ice can be used however it must be wrapped in such a way that none of it makes contact with the icebox as it can damage the internal walls. We also recommend keeping the box shut whenever possible to keep the cold air in and pre-cooling the icebox for a few hours before putting your food in. If you are still having issues we suggest checking your lid seal.
I have broken a latch on my icebox, which ones do I replace it with?
Currently we use 2 main sizes of latches across our range. All Icekool iceboxes use the short loop latches. All other iceboxes use the long loop latches. Both sets of latches are available from the icebox parts section of our website. Some older boxes used to feature rubber latches without the plasic loop, these can be replaced by the long loop latches as we no longer manufacture the rubber ones but the new ones will fit the older iceboxes.
What can I use to clean my icebox?
We recommend using warm soapy water to clean your icebox. Do not use chemical cleaners or solvents as these can affect the lining of the icebox.
2 - FRIDGE/FREEZERS
My fridge/freezer works fine on 240 volt but I am getting an error light/not cooling when running on 12 volt. What is wrong?
This is by far the most common question we get and usually characterised by the error light flashing once every 5 seconds, the compressor stopping and starting frequently or not cooling or in some cases the fridge will work when the vehicle is running but not when it is off. In 99% of cases it is due to the power source and/or wiring to the cigarette socket. This can be either the battery is flat or not holding charge or the wiring between the battery and cigarette socket is too long or of poor quality. Many vehicles only come with 3mm wiring as standard which can cause these issues. Evakool recommends at least 6mm wiring between the battery and socket to ensure there is minimal drop in voltage. If you have a model with adjustable voltage cutout we recommend leaving this on the lowest setting.
What temperature should I set my fridge/freezer to?
As a general guide, we recommend if you are using your item as a fridge set it between 0 and 4 degrees celsius. If using as a freezer, particularly if you want to freeze non frozen product we recommend setting it at -16 degrees celsius or below. In the case of RF fibreglass and Fridgemate models when using as a fridge/freezer combo set the display to what you want the freezer to be and the difference between the two compartments will be approximately 16 degrees (depending on how far out the divider is).
My fridge/freezer has a digital display which keeps showing a couple of degrees either side of what I set it to, why is the temperature changing so much?
This is a built in feature of the electronics, designed to ensure the fridge does not run 100% of the time. Your actual temperature inside and the temperature of your food/drinks will not vary that much. If it is fluctuating more than 5/6 degrees either way on the display try putting a thermometer inside the fridge to see if the display is correct. If it is still having issues please contact Evakool or your local repair agent.
How long should it take my fridge/freezer to cool down?
Your fridge/freezer will begin cooling within half an hour of being turned on. The amount of time it takes to get to temperature depends on how much product is inside, what temperature it is set to and whether or not the product inside is already cold/cool rather than warm. If the fridge is empty it should be able to get down to temperature within a few hours.
How often should I use my fridge? Is it ok to leave it off when not in use?
You can use the fridge as much as you want however as a compressor is essentially a motor it does benefit from being used in the same way a car engine benefits from being used. We recommend running your fridge for at least a day each month to allow all of the components to remain oiled and lubricated.
How can I power my fridge?
Almost all of Evakools fridges feature both 12/24 and 240 volt operation built in and those that dont (RF and GFM range) are able to do so with the use of an adapter. This means that you have the convenience of running your fridge in your car or caravan, off a battery or off normal wall power. When running on 12 volt we recommend using solar panels to keep your battery charged and if possible run the fridge on 240 volt to cool it down before switching to 12 volt. When switching between power sources allow a few minutes for the electronics to reset before plugging into the new power source.
I bought a mounting kit with my Platinum Upright fridge, how do I fit it?
My fridge is running all of the time and freezing everything and changing the temperature on the controls doesn't help!
You may have your fridge in Emergency Mode. Some of our fridges have a small (usually red) switch on them which puts the fridge into Emergency Mode. This will bypass the controls and make the fridge run flat out and is designed as a backup in case you ever have issues with the display or controls and are a long way from a repairer. Simply move the switch to the off position and see if it resolves the problem.
Do I need to have my fridge on a level surface for it to operate?
No, our fridges will happily operate up to angles of 30 degrees. We do recommend keeping them as level as possible however so they do not have to work as hard. If you are expecting to take them on extremely rough roads it is also recommended to put a sheet of foam under the base for protection.
I have one of the Supercheap Auto Thermoelectric Cooler/Warmers, how does it work?
The Ridge Ryder SC35T is unique in our range in that it is not actually a fridge, it is designed to cool or warm food or drink. Rather than setting a temperature like our other fridges you select a power setting. 1 is the lowest and provides the least amount of cooling/warming and 7 is the highest. These units can cool up to 25 degrees below ambient temperature and heat up to 65 degrees.
3 - BUYING ONLINE
What ranges can I purchase directly from Evakool?
The only ranges we sell directly to the public as brand new in box units are our Travelmate, Glacier, Koolmate, RV and DC25/35/40 fridge/freezers and our Kooltropik Iceboxes. All other ranges must be purchased through dealers or may be available as factory seconds direct from Evakool.
What are factory seconds?
The name factory seconds is a blanket term Evakool uses to cover any of our units that we deem are not first grade brand new. These can include units that have had a mark or scratch as they have come through production, units that have been on display in our showroom or at trade show, demo models and in some cases reconditioned units. All of these units are fully tested by our trained technical team and carry a 12 month warranty.* Our Fibreglass Fridge/Freezer reconditioned models carry a 24 month warranty.
Where can I find a dealer?
Check out www.evakool.com/dealers to search for your nearest dealer
I've seen a range called Kickass available from Australian Direct, are they they same as your fridges?
The Kickass range was a special range we made for Australian Direct up until August 2018 . Internally they are the same as our Glacier range however they have a few added extras like WiFi functionality and extra ports. Newer models since that date are sourced elsewhere and are not made by or supported by Evakool. They are available exclusively through Australian Direct
I want a fridge/icebox with the best insulation, what type should I get?
Out of all of the ranges we make, our fibreglass fridges and iceboxes are definitely the best for insulation due to their ability to not retain heat. If your icebox or fridge is going to be sitting in direct sunlight or somewhere particularly hot, they are definitely the way to go.
4 - WARRANTY CLAIMS
I have a fridge/icebox purchased through Supercheap Auto and I have a warranty issue. How do I proceed?
The Ridge Ryder range and other fridges purchased through Supercheap Auto must be taken back to your local Supercheap Auto store if you wish to make a warranty claim. The units will then be tested in store and sent back to Evakool. Note the Travelcool range of coolers are not made by or supported by Evakool
What information do I need to make a warranty claim? Do you have repairers around Australia?
In the event of something needing to be fixed under warranty, you will need a copy of your proof of purchase/receipt and as much information about the fault as possible. You can then call your local service agent listed at www.evakool.com/repairers or contact Evakool directly. The exception to this as above is any item purchased through Supercheap Auto which must be organised through their stores.
How long is the warranty on my unit?
Unless specified otherwise, the warranty on Evakool units is as follows:
5 Years - RF, GFM, FM, IB, TMX, TMDZ 2nd Generation, Supakool, Icekool, Evakool, Xtreme, Islander, Icemate, Kooltropik
2 Years - Glacier, DC Platinum Upright, Ridge Ryder, BCD, TM, RV, TMDZ 1st Generation, Elite Upright
6 Months - EP12 240v adapters
I purchased a second hand unit off a friend/the internet, do I still get a warranty?
No, the warranty offered on these units is for the first purchaser only and is non transferable. The only time a second hand unit will carry a warranty is units that are sold directly through us as second hand or reconditioned units and that is only for the person who purchased them from us.
